Neverness to Everness (NTE) and Honkai: Star Rail (HSR) share similarities as gacha RPGs but offer fundamentally different gameplay experiences. NTE is an open-world action RPG while HSR is a turn-based RPG.
Combat System
Honkai: Star Rail uses classic turn-based combat where you build a 4-character team and select skills each turn. Strategy comes from team composition, weakness breaking, and ultimate timing. This system is beginner-friendly and doesn't require quick reflexes.
NTE features real-time action combat requiring dodging, parrying, and combo execution. The pace is fast with a high skill ceiling. If you prefer hands-on action over strategic planning, NTE is the better fit.
Exploration
HSR features linear, instanced maps for each planet. Exploration focuses on story progression and chest collection within contained areas.
NTE offers a seamless open world in Hethereau City, freely explorable with streets, interiors, and underground areas. Exploration freedom far exceeds HSR.
Worldbuilding
HSR is a space opera where the protagonist travels between planets aboard the Astral Express. The narrative is grand sci-fi.
NTE is modern urban fantasy set in Hethereau City, where Espers take on commissions to fight Anomalies. The setting feels closer to everyday life with strong immersion.
Gacha System
HSR's limited banner has a 50/50 mechanic requiring up to 180 pulls for a guaranteed featured character. NTE's limited banner has no 50/50, so 90 pulls guarantees the featured unit and makes the banner path far more efficient.
NTE also offers a Beginner Banner selector (20-pull pity plus an S-rank choice) and a Standard Banner selector at 50 pulls, neither of which exist in HSR.
Progression
HSR progression includes character levels, Light Cones, Relics (6-piece sets), and Traces. Relic RNG is the main source of grinding pressure.
NTE includes character levels, weapons, and Disk sets (4-piece) with similar random sub-stats. NTE also adds Esper growth paths for additional character differentiation.
Multiplayer
HSR is primarily single-player with limited co-op features such as borrowing characters and certain event-style systems.
NTE supports 4-player co-op for Anomaly dungeons and open-world exploration together.
Who Should Play What
If you prefer turn-based strategy, story-driven progression, and sci-fi worldbuilding, Honkai: Star Rail is the better match.
If you prefer real-time action, free exploration, and urban fantasy, Neverness to Everness is the better match.
The two games are different enough to enjoy simultaneously. Action fans will usually lean toward NTE, while players who enjoy planning and system optimization may prefer HSR.

Version 1.2 Update (June 2026)
By version 1.2, NTE had expanded its live roster, added Companion/Bond progression, and opened more themed exploration content such as the amusement park area. Honkai: Star Rail continued its own 3.x content cycle. The core difference remains unchanged: NTE is an open-world action RPG, HSR is a turn-based RPG, and NTE still holds the bigger banner-efficiency advantage because it does not use a 50/50 system.
